Ghana Beyond Subsistence Establishes Fourteenth Group of Women Farmers
The newest GBS MLS group from left to right: Confidence Bekui, Grace Akordor, Theodora Bekui, Florence Prempeh, Benard Asamoah, Piece Amponi, Emefa Agbenyega, Kafui Addae, Rejoice Hiniku, Rejoice Danso, and Dr. Richmond Nfodzo.
Ghana Beyond Subsistence (GBS) is pleased to announce the addition of 10 women farmers to our network of almost 140 mostly-women farmers. Since 2003, GBS has developed revolving loan plans "microloan and savings" (MLS) for fourteen groups of subsistence farmers. Our newest group will be our fifth group in the town of Wegbe-Kpalime.
Where women farmers and petty traders are not able to rely on access to the traditional loan and savings programs offered by financial institutions, GBS makes it possible for the people in our groups to purchase agricultural inputs and trade goods on credit and repay their loans upon harvest or sale.
The farmers of this group grow maize, leafy greens, vegetables, rice, cassava, fruit, and engage in petty trading and marketing.
At the end of the farming season, each farmer repairs their loan along with an interest charge determined by the group. Wegbe V has set an interest charge of 10%. The repayment amount along with the interest will make up the amount available for the following season.
All GBS MLS groups have been established and maintained thanks to our generous donors. Setting up a new GBS MLS group costs $1200.
