Farmers of the four Ghana Beyond Subsistence (GBS) Microloan and Savings groups in Kpenoe expressed their support for the Ghana Government School Feeding Program by donating four bags of maize from their farms to Kpenoe Primary School. The growing season disappointed them; otherwise, they planned to donate maize, rice, beans, and ground nuts.
The Management of the school authorities appreciated this kind of gestures from the groups and prayed that farmers have favourable weather in this 2024 farming season and a bumper harvest.
In the past five years, the Government of Ghana has implemented a partially funded School Feeding Program for basic and primary school learners. This program is intended to enhance enrolment in schools towards compulsory free education.
Ghanaian government research shows that before the implementation of the School Feeding Program, most young learners did not have access to breakfast in their homes before classes and that many students returned home during break time to eat. For many learners, they met the absence of their parents at home and did not return to school after the break period.
It is in these circumstances and challenges that the government came out with this program intended to feed the children and to encourage better attendance. Despite these best-laid plans, the government has been consistently slow to provide financial assistance to the schools, leaving it to the communities to provide food for their students.
The GBS Microloan and Savings program supports farmers and traders in rural development with a focus on women farmers. It also provides Agricultural Extension and herd health services within the target communities of Kpenoe, Takla, Hodzo-Achiansi, Akoefe-Gadza, Wegbe-Kpalime and Adaklu-Waya.
