Students in five Junior high schools in Ho, Ghana returned from their April break to find their ICT classrooms connected to the Internet for the first time ever.
After two years of planning and fundraising by the NGO Ghana Beyond Subsistence (GBS), the first five of twelve JHS and Primary schools have functioning computer labs where students and teachers can engage in research and discovery-based education.
In these newly connected classrooms, teachers plan to encourage independent, project-based learning (PBL). When US travelers arrive in Ghana for their annual GBS Immersion Experience in mid-June, they will collaborate with schoolteachers from six JHS in a workshop setting where they will share PBL ideas and methods. In a subsequent meeting, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, agriculture, math) teachers will practice virtual exchanges with two scientists in the US.
Over the coming weeks, Reagan Bruce of Emesh Technology LTD will complete installation and set-up of the remaining seven schools.
GBS continues to raise funds to support monthly internet data charges.
Check back soon as GBS will showcase reactions and comments that we hear from teachers and students in Ho.
