Making Intercultural Connections through Play

Updated: Apr 12

Every year when we drive around Ghana, we see children playing soccer, often with a homemade ball. We’ve seen a sock full of rocks tied with string, a ball of cloth wrapped with tape, and many deflated vestiges of soccer balls.

Yes, there are relatively inexpensive balls available in Ho. Even then the kids don’t have money. Also, the balls aren’t quality ones and wouldn’t last long.

This has led us to request and purchase soccer balls, footballs, and kick balls. We pack as many as we can. We take them to schools with air pumps. It’s a lot of fun to play soccer and teach new games to schoolchildren and teachers!

We also try to reserve a few to drop with groups of children playing in a field. Another of the joys of being in Ghana.
