Improved Herd Health
Ghana Beyond Subsistence supports farmers in the eight small towns where we have Microloan and Savings (MLS) groups with affordable, regular immunizations and health checks for goats, sheep, and chickens. GBS works with veterinary care providers who provide subsidized, low-cost treatments for intestinal parasites, peste des petits ruminants virus (PPR), and mange.
Chickens and small ruminants are of great importance in Ghana, West Africa as they provide provide food and a vital source of income. Diseases that adversely effect ruminant productivity prove harmful for animals and costly to farmers.
Diseases that adversely effect small animal and chicken productivity prove harmful for animals and costly to farmers. Even so, some farmers fail to understand the importance of vaccinations for herd health and maintaining a stable income. GBS works closely with scientific agricultural extension specialists to provide agricultural education for farmers geared toward animal husbandry and herd health. For the past two decades, GBS has collaborated with the Evangelical Presbyterian Development and Relief Agency (EPDRA) and Extension Officer, Dickson Asase.
Since education is the key to understanding and promoting best practices in animal health, GBS has gradually rolled out herd health treatments and allowed the farmers to make the decision whether or not to treat their herds and flocks based upon what they learn from our educational outreach efforts and what they observe with the herd health success of their neighbors and fellow farmers.
